In a significant development following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including top government officials, the black box of the Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter has been recovered. 

This was confirmed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr Frank Amoakohene, in a public update shared on his official Facebook page.

The black box, also known as the flight data recorder, is a critical component in aviation accident investigations, as it stores vital information about the aircraft’s final moments before the crash. 

Its recovery is expected to aid aviation experts in determining the exact cause of the accident, which shocked the nation and drew global condolences.

The helicopter, a Ghana Air Force Z-9, went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, while transporting high-ranking government officials on official duty. Among those who perished were Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Also confirmed deceased were Dr Sarpong, a top government aide, and Hon. Aboagye, a regional development coordinator, whose families have now been officially visited by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) in the wake of the tragedy.

In addition to announcing the black box recovery, the Regional Minister also revealed that the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has opened a Book of Condolence (BOC) for the fallen leaders. The book allows the public and dignitaries to pay tribute and offer their sympathies.

A tragic plane crash near Nairobi, Kenya, has claimed the lives of six people after a medical aircraft operated by AMREF Flying Doctors crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in the Morendat Farm area near Lake Naivasha.

According to aviation officials, the light medical aircraft had departed from Wilson Airport at 2:14 PM local time, en route to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. Just three minutes after takeoff, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control and plummeted into a house, sparking a fire and causing massive destruction.

The crash resulted in the deaths of four passengers aboard the plane and two individuals on the ground, confirmed Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula. He also noted that two more people on the ground suffered serious injuries.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene. Tasha Wanjira, a local resident, said she saw the plane burning in the air before impact. Another resident, Irene Wangui, said the aircraft passed so close to her building that it shook from the vibrations moments before the crash.

Emergency services, including the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Red Cross responders, and other local rescue teams, arrived quickly at the scene. A helicopter was dispatched to assist in rescue operations. Red Cross teams recovered four bodies from the wreckage, while others worked to support those injured and affected in the area.

The KCAA has launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash and expressed its condolences to the families affected.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission,” the Authority said in a statement.

AMREF Flying Doctors, a nonprofit medical air service, also confirmed that the aircraft was on a humanitarian medical mission at the time of the crash.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations continue.

The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Ali Adolf John, has announced that the mortal remains of the late Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Mohammed Ibrahim Murtala, will be airlifted to Tamale on Thursday, 7 August 2025, for burial in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Speaking during a visit to the bereaved family in Tamale on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, the Minister formally relayed the tragic news of Dr Murtala’s death in a military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. 

In a sorrowful tone, he extended condolences on behalf of the government and assured the family of full state support, including a befitting burial and a dignified funeral.

Dr Murtala, who also served as the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was among eight high-ranking officials who lost their lives in the crash.

## Background of the Crash

The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday, 5 August 2025, when a military helicopter transporting government officials from Kumasi to Accra crashed in a forested area near Adansi Akrofuom. 

Preliminary investigations point to possible adverse weather conditions, though a full inquiry is being conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority.

Among the other victims were Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former NDC parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.

The helicopter crew—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah—also lost their lives in the crash.

With more than 20 years of industry experience, she has held various high-level positions in reputable financial institutions.

Her previous roles include Head of ATM and Card Technology at Ecobank and Head of E-banking at Fidelity Bank. She has also served in international consultancy positions, notably as a Digital Financial Services Consultant with the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) and as a Remittance Expert with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

Prior to joining GhIPSS, Mrs Arthur held senior leadership positions at Fidelity Bank Ghana and E Process International S.A. (the technology arm of the Ecobank Group) and worked as a private consultant, where she led teams in delivering technical expertise in IT infrastructure and payment systems.

In 2012, he was appointed Minister for Communications, a role in which he helped modernise Ghana’s digital infrastructure, expand broadband access, and promote e-governance initiatives.

In 2023, Dr Omane Boamah was appointed Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, playing a pivotal role in the party’s digital electoral strategies and backend systems for the 2024 general elections.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed the crash and said efforts are underway to recover and examine the wreckage. The cause of the incident remains unknown as investigations continue.

This tragic accident comes just over a year after a similar incident on March 19, 2024, when a military helicopter crash-landed near Bonsukrom in the Western Region. Thankfully, that earlier accident resulted in no fatalities.

The government has pledged to provide timely updates as the situation develops and further details are confirmed.

Ghanaian midfielder Abu Francis has officially signed a four-year contract with French Ligue 1 side Toulouse, completing a move from Belgian powerhouse Club Brugge.

The 24-year-old joins the French outfit after a solid spell with Cercle Brugge, where he made over 60 league appearances, scoring once and providing seven assists.

Francis attracted widespread interest during the transfer window. 

Turkish clubs İstanbul Başakşehir FK and Trabzonspor were among the frontrunners for his signature, while English side Burnley and Italian clubs Torino and Genoa also monitored his situation.

The Ekuona Royal Family of Nsuta has officially announced that the one-week celebration of Ghanaian music icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba, will be held in Accra on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

This announcement follows the formal notification of Daddy Lumba’s passing to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace.

In a statement released by the family, the Abusuapanyin (family head) confirmed that the final funeral rites will be held in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, with the exact venue to be disclosed at a later date.

The family explained that the decision to hold the funeral in Kumasi is deeply rooted in Daddy Lumba’s royal heritage.

“It is only right that his final resting and farewell be rooted in his hometown and royal ancestry,” the family head stated.

Given Daddy Lumba’s long-standing residence and massive fan base in Accra, the family revealed that plans are underway to officially inform the Ga Mantse and the Ga Traditional Council.

Recognising the legendary artist’s global legacy, the Ekuona Royal Family called on fans and well-wishers to join in the commemorations with decorum and reverence.

“We humbly ask that all who attend the celebrations and funeral behave in a dignified manner to honour his memory and ensure a peaceful and successful commemoration befitting of the legend he was,” the statement added.

The family also extended heartfelt appreciation to Ghanaians at home and abroad for the overwhelming tributes and support since the news of his passing.

Additional details regarding the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

Daddy Lumba’s one-week celebration set for August 30

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has officially responded to claims made by Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale, who alleged that EOCO officers raided his Trassaco Valley residence with firearms.

In a press statement, EOCO clarified that the operation was a lawful, intelligence-led mission carried out by its Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. 

The joint operation led to the seizure of a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, believed to be linked to a major financial crime under investigation in the U.S.

EOCO emphasised that officers conducted the search professionally, respectfully, and without any confrontation. The agency further explained that the presence of armed officers was standard protocol to ensure the safety of personnel during such high-stakes operations.

“It is a standard safety protocol for SARU officers to carry weapons while on duty,” EOCO stated.

According to the agency, Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, appealed to officers not to publicise the vehicle seizure, citing potential damage to his public image.

He was reportedly allowed to voluntarily surrender the car, which is now in EOCO’s custody.

EOCO also confirmed that the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice will soon submit a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to the Government of Ghana to facilitate the formal return of the vehicle to the United States.

Additionally, EOCO revealed that Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) have been identified as persons of interest and will be invited to assist with ongoing investigations.

While the exact timing of the operation remains unclear, Shatta Wale has taken to social media today to express his frustration and anger over the incident. According to sources, the artiste has been under EOCO’s watch for some time regarding suspected irregularities involving high-end vehicles in his possession.

In a series of emotional social media posts, Shatta Wale directly addressed EOCO’s Executive Director, Raymond Archer, accusing him of overstepping his mandate and warning that his actions could affect the political fortunes of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Raymond Archer, EOCO boss, it’s you who will cause the NDC to lose power in the next four years. Bringing guns to my house was uncalled for!” he wrote.

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has officially picked up nomination forms to contest in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries.

The announcement was made in a Facebook post on Tuesday, 5 August, by Kwasi Kwarteng, a spokesperson for his campaign team.
“Official Update: Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has officially picked nomination forms to contest in the 2026 NPP flagbearership race,” the post read.

Mr Agyapong’s decision to enter the race reaffirms his long-standing interest in leading the governing party, having previously contested in the 2024 NPP presidential primaries. Although he placed third in that contest—behind Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto—his campaign gained significant grassroots support, especially for his strong messages on discipline, patriotism, and economic independence.

Known for his outspoken personality and business background, Kennedy Agyapong has been a prominent figure within the NPP for over two decades. He represented the Assin Central Constituency in Parliament from 2001 to 2025, serving multiple terms and earning a reputation for speaking bluntly on national issues, often challenging both opposition and internal party decisions.

His 2024 campaign was marked by a strong call for national discipline, anti-corruption, youth employment, and a home-grown economic agenda. Kennedy Agyapong picks forms to contest NPP 2026 flagbearer race

Authorities at Agona Swedru Senior High School (SHS) in Ghana's Central Region have suspended 25 final-year students following a violent altercation reportedly triggered by a same-sex relationship proposal.

The school’s headmistress, Mrs Golda Esi Andam, confirmed the incident in an interview with Accra-based Onua News, stating that the disciplinary action came after thorough investigations and hearings.

According to school officials, the situation began when one male student allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male student, who declined the advance. 

The student who rejected the proposal reportedly shared the incident with peers, some of whom advised him to feign interest in return.

When both students agreed to meet again under this pretence, a group of students believed to be friends of the one who rejected the proposal allegedly ambushed and assaulted the student who made the initial approach.

In response, the assaulted student is said to have informed his dormitory mates, prompting a retaliatory attack. 

The conflict soon escalated into a broader confrontation, involving numerous students and requiring urgent intervention by school authorities.

Mrs Andam explained that all involved students were granted a fair hearing before the school imposed the disciplinary measures.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has strongly dismissed recent accusations levelled against the sector Minister by a social media personality. 

According to the Ministry, the claims are entirely false, misleading, and calculated to tarnish the Minister’s reputation and undermine the work of the Ministry.

In a statement released over the weekend, the Ministry responded to a video making rounds on social media in which the Minister was accused of being disrespectful and unprofessional during a public engagement. 

The Ministry categorically denied the allegations, describing them as “wholly unfounded and gravely misleading.”

The statement emphasised that the Minister has always conducted herself with humility, professionalism, and a high sense of responsibility. 

It added that her interactions with stakeholders, industry players, and the public have been anchored on mutual respect and a shared commitment to the growth of Ghana’s tourism, culture, and creative sectors.

The Ministry noted that since assuming office, the Minister has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to promoting Ghana’s cultural heritage, supporting creatives, and enhancing the country’s global image as a leading tourism destination. 

Her dedication, according to the Ministry, is evident in the successful initiatives and engagements she continues to lead across the country.

Stonebwoy thrills at African Music Festival in Germany, pushes Ghana music global

Former Arsenal and Ghanaian international midfielder Thomas Partey has been granted conditional bail after appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, where he faces multiple charges of rape and sexual assault.

The 32-year-old footballer appeared in court on Tuesday, following formal charges filed by the UK’s Metropolitan Police, which include five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. 

Partey has denied all allegations.

The charges are the result of a three-year investigation into alleged incidents involving three separate women. 

According to authorities, the charges consist of two counts of rape involving one woman, three counts of rape involving a second woman, and one count of sexual assault involving a third.

The alleged offences are reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, a period when Partey was actively playing for Arsenal Football Club in the English Premier League.

## Bail Conditions Imposed

As per reports, his bail terms include:

- No contact with any of the women involved in the case

- Mandatory notification to police of any change in address

- Police must be informed before any international travel.

The identities of the complainants remain protected under UK law, in line with legal provisions that safeguard alleged victims of sexual crimes.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that the charges were brought after a comprehensive review of evidence collected during the investigation, which began in February 2022 following the initial complaint of rape.

Partey was first arrested in July 2022, but this week’s court appearance marks the first formal response to the charges since his arrest.

Legal proceedings are ongoing, and a future court date is expected to be scheduled.

Former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has openly criticised the lack of accountability surrounding the unfulfilled promise of a Ghana Fashion Week event initially announced by former President John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview with Hitz FM on August 4, 2025, Okraku-Mantey questioned the silence from stakeholders within the tourism and creative arts industry regarding the delayed fashion show, which was scheduled to take place in July 2025. 

The event was promised by President Mahama during the official launch of the Black Star Experience held in May.

“President Mahama promised a fashion show in July and said he would walk the catwalk himself,” Okraku-Mantey stated. 

“We are now in August, and nothing has happened. No explanations have been given. There’s complete silence.”

The former minister went on to emphasise what he perceives as a double standard in how the public and industry players respond to political leadership in the creative sector.

“If it were Mark Okraku-Mantey in office today, there would be loud criticism everywhere. But because I’m not, and it's a different administration, everyone is quiet,” he lamented.

Okraku-Mantey used the moment to revisit broader issues of selective scrutiny in the creative industry, drawing comparisons to recent events such as the candlelight vigil organised for highlife icon Daddy Lumba. 

He questioned the real tourism value of such activities and used the opportunity to highlight his own past initiatives—including the introduction of “funeral tourism”.

The funeral tourism concept, introduced during his time in office, aimed to leverage culturally significant funeral events as a means to stimulate local economic activity, particularly in regions like Ashanti, where such ceremonies draw massive crowds.

While the concept generated national conversation and even criticism from some quarters, Okraku-Mantey reaffirmed his belief in its potential to boost domestic tourism and local economies. 

He maintained that Ghana’s cultural richness should be a key asset in tourism development, provided it's marketed with innovation and purpose.

Despite growing calls for transparency and accountability, no official communication has been made by the current government or the Ministry of Tourism regarding the status of the fashion show promised by the former president.

Mark Okraku Mantey questions Mahama’s broken Ghana fashion week promise

A major fire outbreak on Monday evening has destroyed the housemaster’s bungalow and partially damaged the boys’ dormitory at Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in Koforidua, Eastern Region.

The incident occurred around 7:00 PM and reportedly began in the housemaster’s bungalow, located adjacent to the boys’ dormitory. 

Eyewitnesses say the flames spread rapidly, intensifying before emergency responders could arrive.

By the time personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reached the scene, the bungalow had been completely consumed by fire. 

The blaze had begun spreading to the boys’ dormitory, raising concerns of a larger catastrophe.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the GNFS, firefighters managed to bring the situation under control and prevent the complete destruction of the dormitory. 

Their timely intervention was instrumental in averting further devastation.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. 

School authorities and fire officials have confirmed that investigations will be launched to determine the source of the blaze.

Fire destroys housemaster's bungalow, damages dorm at Oyoko Methodist SHS

The General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has firmly refuted circulating claims that the GHC18 million secured through the association’s latest media rights agreement with Adesa Production Limited (APL) originated from government funding.

Announced last week in Accra ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, the landmark broadcast partnership is set to inject GHC1 million into each top-tier club before the campaign begins. 

The comprehensive package also promises enhanced television coverage, including the live telecast of three matches every week and a dedicated studio analysis show.

Addressing rumours that the funds were sourced from the state, Harrison Addo stressed that no direct financial contribution was made by the government.

“The government has not taken its money, and it is being given to the Football Association. The government’s role in this partnership was only to create an enabling environment, and we are grateful for the support from the government,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

He acknowledged that while the government played a key facilitative role, its contribution was non-monetary. 

Notably, he highlighted the support of prominent government officials such as Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Minister of Youth and Sports Kofi Adams.

“The Chief of Staff, Majority Leader and the Sports Minister all said that they are in support of the partnership, so the enabling environment for other companies who will also want to come and support the processes and the benefits are there.

“The government has not given us physical cash to invest in the league, but we are hoping that this partnership works well because it is in the interest of the country if it does work well, but the money is not from the government,” he added.

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League is officially set to commence in mid-September, with clubs, fans, and stakeholders anticipating a revitalised broadcast experience and increased league visibility.

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey is reportedly set to sign with La Liga side Villarreal as a free agent, following the expiration of his contract with Arsenal in June 2025.

The 32-year-old has completed a medical and is expected to pen a two-year deal that will keep him at Villarreal until 2027. 

A key factor influencing Partey's decision is the opportunity to continue competing in the UEFA Champions League, which Villarreal qualified for.

Partey's departure from Arsenal comes after five seasons at the Emirates, where he made 167 appearances and scored nine goals across all competitions. 

Signed from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for €50 million, Partey played in both central midfield and right-back roles under manager Mikel Arteta. 

He featured 52 times for the Gunners during the 2024–25 campaign.

However, Partey's move comes as he faces serious legal challenges in the UK. 

On July 4, 2025, the midfielder was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, allegations stemming from an investigation that began in February 2022. 

The charges relate to incidents involving three women, though their identities remain protected under UK law.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the charges followed a detailed examination of a "comprehensive file of evidence." 

Partey, who was first arrested in July 2022, has denied all allegations.

His legal representative, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose, stated in July that Partey "denies all the charges against him and welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name." 

Despite being under investigation, Partey continued playing for Arsenal throughout the legal process and remained active on the pitch while on bail.

Partey is scheduled to appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5.

Prior to finalising his move to Villarreal, Partey was reportedly in discussions to extend his stay at Arsenal, but both parties were unable to agree on new contract terms.
