Semenyo hails ‘perfect’ Man City environment after EFL game

Antoine Semenyo says he is thriving at Manchester City after scoring in a decisive 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the first leg of the 2026 EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s side leave St James’ Park with a commanding advantage, thanks to influential second-half performances and a late killer blow that puts the holders on the brink of another Wembley appearance.
After a cagey opening 45 minutes that produced minimal opportunities, City came alive after the restart and asserted full control.
Their breakthrough came eight minutes into the second half when Jeremy Doku’s bursting run down the left carved open Newcastle’s defence. His cut-back was nudged on by Bernardo Silva before Semenyo reacted sharply to convert from close range.

The Ghana international thought he had doubled City’s lead minutes later, flicking Tijjani Reijnders’ corner beyond Nick Pope, but VAR intervened and ruled the effort out following a marginal offside against Erling Haaland in the buildup.
Newcastle struggled to carve clear openings despite a spirited response. Eddie Howe’s men registered 0.64 expected goals on the night, with Bruno Guimaraes striking the post and efforts from Yoane Wissa, Sven Botman and Maximilian Woltemade coming close to restoring parity.
City continued to threaten in transition, with Reijnders, Silva and Rayan Cherki all forcing Pope into key saves. Their pressure finally told deep into stoppage time. A sharp exchange between Cherki and Rayan Aït-Nouri sliced through a stretched back line, and the young attacker calmly slotted home to secure City’s two-goal cushion.
The champions now take a significant advantage into next month’s second leg at the Etihad Stadium, leaving Newcastle with a mountain to climb if they hope to defend their trophy and return to Wembley.
Speaking after the match, Semenyo praised the atmosphere and standards at his new club.

“The whole environment here is perfect. Everyone is confident and wanting to achieve the best,” he told Sky Sports. “I have come into that, and they helped with my confidence and made me feel welcome.”
“It’s been a lot, but I have enjoyed it so far. I am picking things up very quickly and enjoying it.”
Semenyo added that his transition from Bournemouth has been seamless.
“I am just taking the confidence I had from Bournemouth here and playing with a smile on my face. I am enjoying every moment.”
With momentum building and confidence high, Manchester City appear firmly on course for another Wembley final — and Semenyo is determined to play his part.
