According to French outlet L’Équipe, the Moroccan Football Federation is expected to officially confirm on Thursday the end of its partnership with Walid Regragui, who has stepped down from his role as head coach following the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 50-year-old tactician will be succeeded by Mohamed Ouahbi, a youth development specialist currently associated with R.S.C. Anderlecht and Morocco’s Morocco U20 national team, which he guided to victory at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in October.

Regragui was appointed shortly before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, replacing Vahid Halilhodzic. Under his leadership, Morocco made history by reaching the tournament’s semi-finals, where they were defeated 2–0 by the France national football team on December 14, 2022.

He later guided the Atlas Lions to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations on January 18, where they narrowly lost 1–0 after extra time to the Senegal national football team, marking Morocco’s first appearance in the tournament’s final since 2004.

Between those milestones, Morocco endured a disappointing campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, exiting in the round of 16 after a 2–0 defeat to the South Africa national football team on January 30, 2024.

Prior to that setback, the team had enjoyed a remarkable run of 19 consecutive victories before drawing 1–1 with the Mali national football team, and their only other loss during that period came against Senegal.

The early exit in Côte d’Ivoire sparked widespread criticism regarding the team’s playing style and Regragui’s media interactions.

Supporters in Rabat reportedly voiced their frustration during matches late last year, while public backing from federation president Faouzi Lekjaa had been largely absent for several months.

Following the intense scrutiny and fatigue after the tournament, Regragui ultimately chose to step down.

Initially, the federation considered appointing Xavi Hernandez as his successor. However, officials later prioritised selecting a Moroccan coach as part of a broader strategy to promote local expertise ahead of future international competitions.

Ouahbi will be supported by a technical team that includes João Sacramento, formerly an assistant to José Mourinho, as well as Youssouf Hadji, who was part of Hervé Renard’s coaching staff during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Their presence is expected to add valuable top-level experience to Ouahbi’s relatively new role at the senior international level.
