Wales deny Ghana victory with late equaliser in Cardiff friendly

The Black Stars of Ghana were denied a famous victory as Wales struck deep into stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw in a pre-World Cup international friendly in Cardiff on Tuesday night, as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana had looked on course for an impressive win after teenage midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi put the visitors ahead in the second half, but substitute Charlie Koumas struck in the 93rd minute to salvage a draw for the hosts.

Wales dominate early; Ghana withstand pressure.

Wales started on the brighter side, controlling possession and dictating the tempo in the opening stages. Ghana needed time to settle, though Abdul Fatawu Issahaku provided the first shot of the game in the fifth minute, which was comfortably blocked.

The hosts came close on several occasions, forcing Lawrence Ati-Zigi into a sharp save, while another Welsh effort rattled the crossbar as Ghana survived sustained pressure.

Despite Wales’ dominance, the Black Stars created their own chances. A long pass from Elisha Owusu released Issahaku, who set up Jordan Ayew, but the captain failed to keep his effort on target. Ayew was again presented with a clear opportunity in the 27th minute after a defensive lapse but could not convert.

Kamaldeen Sulemana tested Karl Darlow with a powerful effort from distance, while Marvin Senaya nearly broke the deadlock with a deflected strike that forced another save from the Welsh goalkeeper.

The Black Stars returned from halftime with greater intensity, controlling possession and pushing Wales deeper into their own half. However, they were nearly punished in the 55th minute when a dangerous Welsh attack narrowly missed the target.

Ghana continued to threaten, with Jonas Adjetey heading over from a Jordan Ayew delivery just after the hour mark.

The breakthrough eventually arrived through Ernest Nuamah, who drove through midfield before unleashing a shot that rebounded into the path of Caleb Yirenkyi. The youngster reacted quickly to fire home and give Ghana a deserved lead.

Late heartbreak in Cardiff

Wales pushed for an equaliser as the clock ran down, with Ghana’s defence holding firm under pressure. Nico Williams came close with a header, while Brandon Thomas-Asante failed to convert a promising counterattack that could have sealed the game.

However, just as victory seemed secured, Wales struck in the 93rd minute. Koumas found space inside the box and calmly finished to level the score at 1-1.

While Ghana will be frustrated to concede so late, the performance offered encouraging signs ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars showed resilience, attacking intent, and growing cohesion under pressure as they continue their build-up to the tournament in North America.
