Students of the University of Ghana have raised alarm over a steep increase in academic fees for the 2025/2026 academic year, with charges rising by more than 25 per cent across all colleges.

A provisional fee schedule released by the university indicates significant upward adjustments affecting both fresh and continuing students, even as management has yet to publicly explain the rationale behind the hikes.

At the College of Humanities, Level 100 students will pay GH¢3,110 for the 2025/26 academic year, marking a 34 per cent jump from the GH¢2,319 charged in 2024/25. Continuing students at the same college will pay GH¢2,253, up from GH¢1,777, representing a 27 per cent increase.

Undergraduate freshmen at the University of Ghana School of Law will also be affected, with fees rising to GH¢3,226—an increase of 33 percent from the previous GH¢2,435. Continuing law students will see their fees increase from GH¢1,890 to GH¢2,396.

Similar fee adjustments have been recorded across other colleges, including Health Sciences, Basic and Applied Sciences, and Education, where increases range between 25 and 35 per cent.

The sharp increments have sparked concern among students and parents, many of whom claim the changes were introduced without prior notice or consultation.

A major driver of the increase appears to be third-party fees, which have risen sharply. For the 2025/26 academic year, third-party charges stand at GH¢767 for freshmen and GH¢455 for continuing students, up from GH¢255 in 2024/25.

These fees include an SRC Hostel Development Levy of GH¢300, a GH¢100 contribution to the university’s 75th Anniversary Legacy Project, SRC welfare dues of GH¢50, and reprographic fees of GH¢5. Fresh Level 100 and diploma students are also required to pay GH¢312 for a Telecel data package, while continuing students may opt into a monthly Telecel data and airtime package costing GH¢10.22.

Students are urging university authorities to provide clearer justification for the sudden increases, warning that the new fee structure could place significant financial pressure on students and their families.
