Manchester United extended their flawless run under returning caretaker manager Michael Carrick with a commanding 2-0 victory over 10-man Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

The hosts were already in control before Spurs were reduced to 10 men in the 29th minute, when captain Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro, catching the Brazilian’s ankle with raised studs.

Man United had threatened earlier through Casemiro and Matheus Cunha, and they capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 38th minute with an expertly executed set-piece.

Bruno Fernandes delivered a clever corner to Kobbie Mainoo near the byline, and his cutback found Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly fired home from the edge of the box.

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario kept his side in contention before the break, producing a fine save to tip Casemiro’s header over the crossbar.

In the second half, Spurs were again rescued by the offside flag as efforts from Amad Diallo and Cunha were ruled out.

Vicario continued to impress with sharp reflex saves to deny long-range strikes from full-backs Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, but United eventually secured the decisive second goal in the 81st minute.

Substitute Benjamin Sesko narrowly missed Dalot’s dangerous cross, allowing Fernandes to react quickest at the far post and steer the ball past Vicario.

Sesko had a late chance to add a third in stoppage time but headed straight at the Spurs goalkeeper. The victory moves United to within three points of second-placed Manchester City, who are set to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Tottenham’s defeat, meanwhile, leaves them looking nervously over their shoulders, with the possibility of being just six points above the relegation zone should results elsewhere go against them.
