Gun attack at Guanajuato football field kills 11, injures 12 ahead of 2026 World Cup

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured on Sunday when gunmen opened fire at a football field in Salamanca, located in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, local authorities confirmed.

According to a statement from the mayor’s office, ten victims died at the scene while another succumbed to injuries in hospital.

Twelve additional individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical care. Authorities have launched an operation to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The same town also saw four bags containing human remains discovered late Saturday night, underscoring the escalating violence in the area.

Guanajuato, a bustling industrial region and popular tourist destination, has earned a reputation as Mexico’s deadliest state due to ongoing gang-related turf wars, according to official homicide statistics.

The incident comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico will co-host alongside the United States and Canada.

Matches are set to take place in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

The iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City will host five games, including the tournament opener, while the other two stadiums will stage four matches each, in addition to two inter-confederation playoff fixtures.
