Ghana’s fastest man, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, has publicly criticised the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Ghana over what he describes as poor travel arrangements for the national men’s 4x100m relay team ahead of a major competition in Botswana.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Saminu voiced his frustration, accusing authorities of failing to adequately prepare the team for international competition.

“The Ministry of Sports in Ghana needs to do better; don’t set us up for failure,” he wrote.

He contrasted the situation with the level of preparation typically given to the Ghana national football team, suggesting that football receives significantly better logistical support.

“Exhausting Journey” Raises Concerns

According to Saminu, the relay team endured a 14-hour flight followed by a 16-hour layover, conditions he described as unacceptable for elite athletes.

"A 14 hr flight and a 16 hr layover are not acceptable for professional athletes. We're running with jet lag, with no proper recovery,” he stated.

The sprinter warned that such arrangements negatively affect performance, especially in high-level competitions where recovery and preparation are critical.

Saminu’s comments are expected to reignite ongoing concerns about the disparity in support between football and other sports disciplines in Ghana. Athletes in track and field and other lesser-funded sports have frequently raised issues including poor travel logistics, delayed allowances, and inadequate preparation for international events.

Relay Team Still Delivers Strong Performance

Despite the challenges, Saminu and his teammates delivered an impressive performance, securing qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Championships.

This achievement marks Ghana’s fourth appearance in the men’s 4x100m relay at the global competition, underlining the team’s resilience and quality.

No Official Response Yet

As of now, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has not issued an official response to the concerns raised by the athlete.
