The minister for sports and recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the government is considering sponsoring approximately 800 supporters to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to him, the estimated cost per supporter stands at $9,250, which will cover airfare, accommodation, and local transportation for the duration of the tournament.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Monday, March 30, Mr Adams explained that the significant financial outlay has informed the decision to limit the number of beneficiaries.

“The cost is quite high, so we’re thinking about not doing more than 800. The Supporters’ Union are many; we can’t take them all. If we’re successful at sending [this number], the calculations we did, even at the group stage, will cost you about $9,250 per head. We’re paying for their air tickets, accommodation, and transport,” he said.

However, the minister clarified that selected supporters will bear the cost of their visa applications and daily meals.

“They have to pay for their visa fees, which should be their contributions, and feeding fees,” he added.

Mr Adams further disclosed that the ministry has rejected proposals from individuals seeking contracts to supply meals for the supporters during the tournament.

“A lot of people have come to the ministry looking for a feeding contract, but I told them we’re not doing that,” he revealed.
