FIFA Rankings: France reclaim no.1 as World Cup 2026 race reshapes standings

The latest update of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking has delivered significant changes, marking the first time rankings were adjusted in real time during international matches.
A total of 166 men’s internationals have been played since the previous release, including decisive fixtures that finalised qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
At the top of the standings, France have climbed two places to reclaim the No. 1 spot for the first time since September 2018, following back-to-back wins in recent friendlies.
They move ahead of Spain, now second, and reigning world champions Argentina, who drop to third, with minimal points separating the trio.

Spain’s hold on top position—maintained since September 2025—was weakened by a draw against Egypt.
Elsewhere, Portugal has risen to fifth place, overtaking Brazil after securing a win and a draw in recent outings, while Brazil slipped following defeat to France. The rest of the top 10 remains unchanged.
Several teams recorded notable progress within the top 50, including Türkiye, Côte d’Ivoire, Sweden, and Tunisia, all of whom climbed multiple places.
Bosnia and Herzegovina enjoyed a particularly strong rise, jumping six spots after securing qualification for the World Cup alongside Sweden, Türkiye, and Czechia through the European play-offs.

Further down the rankings, Vietnam, Nepal, and Bhutan all made notable gains of more than five places, although they remain outside the top 50.
Eritrea also returned to the rankings for the first time in nearly three years.
With qualification for the 2026 World Cup now complete, only three of the top 30-ranked teams will miss the tournament: Italy, Denmark, and Nigeria. Notably, 37 of the 48 qualified teams are ranked within the top 50 globally.
Meanwhile, Kosovo—despite falling short in the playoffs against Türkiye—has achieved their highest-ever position in the rankings.
