Xabi Alonso’s first competitive match in charge of Real Madrid ended in victory, but his team were made to work hard for a 1-0 win against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Kylian Mbappé delivered the winning moment in the 51st minute, converting a penalty after being fouled by Juan Cruz inside the box.
The French star kept his composure from 12 yards, firing into the bottom-right corner to hand Los Blancos all three points.
The opening half was frustrating for Madrid despite their dominance in possession.
Aurélien Tchouaméni tested Sergio Herrera with a long-range strike, and Mbappé came close with a curling effort that drifted just wide after 34 minutes.
Still, Alonso’s men created little of real substance, finishing the half with 10 attempts, 78% possession, but just 0.33 expected goals.
Osasuna held firm until the restart, when Cruz’s reckless challenge undid their discipline.
Madrid pushed to extend their lead, with Arda Güler firing over from close range and debutant Franco Mastantuono forcing Herrera into action.
However, Alonso’s side lacked their usual attacking fluidity and left the door open for a late scare.
That almost arrived in the 85th minute when Ante Budimir met a cross but headed narrowly over the bar.
Osasuna’s hopes faded completely in stoppage time when substitute Abel Bretones was shown a red card for elbowing Gonzalo García off the ball.
Madrid ultimately secured a clean sheet and a winning start under Alonso, but their performance suggested there is much work to be done if they are to challenge consistently at the top of LaLiga this season.
