The National Sports Authority (NSA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has announced the indefinite suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana following the unfortunate passing of professional boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey.

In a statement released on Thursday, September 25, 2025, the NSA said the decision underscores its commitment—together with the Ministry—to safeguarding the health, safety, and overall welfare of athletes.

The authority explained that the suspension forms part of wider reforms designed to reinforce medical, technical, and regulatory frameworks within the sport.

It further revealed that prior to the announcement, consultations had been concluded with key stakeholders in the boxing fraternity to roll out recommendations made by the Ministerial Committee on Boxing.

These reforms include a comprehensive five-year safety and development plan, supported by the creation of a nine-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) tasked with steering the sport’s affairs.

The NSA called on promoters, trainers, athletes, officials, and fans to comply with the directive, noting that while the temporary halt may present short-term difficulties, it is a crucial step to protect lives and secure the long-term future of boxing in Ghana.

The statement also referenced earlier recommendations made after the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, which highlighted the urgent need for structural reforms in the sport.

Reassuring stakeholders, the NSA stressed its joint commitment with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to ensure that boxing resumes under safer, more professional, and internationally benchmarked standards.
