NPP’s Baba Ali Yusif concedes defeat in Ayawaso East By-Election

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Ali Yusif, has conceded defeat following the polls.
Speaking to 3news at the Collation Centre on March 3, he acknowledged the outcome, stating that the decision of the constituents must be respected. “We accept it in good faith,” he told journalist Eric Mawuena Egbeta.
Although the Electoral Commission is yet to make an official declaration, results collated by Media General’s Election Command Centre indicate that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal, secured 63% of the vote, while Baba Ali Yusif obtained 23%.

Reflecting on the campaign, Baba Yusif noted that his team mounted an intensive outreach effort, engaging voters through extensive house-to-house activities.
Despite these efforts, he admitted that the results did not meet their expectations, adding that his opponent’s victory did not come as a surprise.
He further attributed the relatively low voter turnout to what he described as declining public confidence in the ruling NDC government.

According to him, the total votes cast suggested a lack of enthusiasm among constituents.
Baba Yusif also expressed concerns about the absence of major development projects in the constituency during the by-election period, contrasting it with experiences elsewhere.
Nevertheless, he extended his congratulations to Baba Jamal and wished him well. He reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Ayawaso East, pledging to remain active in community advocacy and to continue speaking out on issues affecting the constituency.
