March 6 declared public holiday for Ghana’s Independence Day 2026

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of the Interior, has declared Friday, March 6, 2026, a statutory public holiday in observance of Independence Day.

In a statement issued to the general public on March 2, 2026, the Ministry announced that Independence Day is a statutory public holiday and must be observed nationwide.
President John Dramani Mahama, acting by Executive Instrument (E.I.), directed that the day be observed across the country in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended.

Ghana celebrates Independence Day annually on March 6 to mark its liberation from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
As the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence, the occasion remains one of the country’s most significant national events, commemorated with parades, cultural displays, and tributes to the “Big Six” and Kwame Nkrumah.
