The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over his silence on the recent arrests of opposition party officials by state security agencies.

According to Ahiagbah, the increasing involvement of state security operatives in the arrest of NPP members over public comments and political statements raises concerns about free speech and democratic governance.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, May 20, he questioned the government’s handling of dissenting views, arguing that the recent trend of arrests appears unprecedented and inconsistent with the democratic principles the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defended while in opposition.

He suggested that the actions of state institutions under the current administration were creating fear among political actors and critics, insisting that security agencies should not be used to intimidate individuals for expressing their opinions.

“President Mahama, I am shocked because none of these happenings marries with his personality and the things he said in opposition. I am surprised if President Mahama is still the President, and if he is, then I am afraid to say that he is not in charge. The things that are happening and the President is silent about them are shocking,” he stated.

Mr Ahiagbah’s comments follow the recent remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, who is being investigated over alleged misinformation and offensive public remarks.

Abronye DC was remanded for two weeks by the court as investigations continue into the allegations against him, a development that has triggered political debate and criticism from sections of the opposition party over the conduct of the security agencies.
