In brief remarks following the signing ceremony, President Mahama explained that the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026, introduces significant structural changes, including the removal of the Office of the Minister of National Security. This adjustment grants the president the flexibility to designate any minister to oversee the country’s security agencies.
He further noted that the law restores the name of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to its original designation, the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI). According to the president, this change is intended to eliminate longstanding confusion between the agency and similarly named institutions.
