The Black Stars of Ghana sealed their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Comoros on Sunday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.
A solitary goal from Mohammed Kudus in the second half was enough for the Black Stars to reach 25 points in Group I, booking their ticket to their fifth Mundial in style.
The dominant Black Stars of Ghana started the game brightly, controlling possession and dictating the tempo, though they created limited goal-scoring opportunities in the first half.
The visitors, Comoros, had their brightest moment in the 25th minute with a powerful header that narrowly missed the post, forcing Asare to rush and clear the danger before the striker could pounce.
Kwesi Sibo and Thomas Partey were exceptional in midfield, providing balance and stability at the centre of the park, while Mohammed Kudus constantly pushed forward in search of the opener.
Despite Ghana’s dominance in midfield, the Black Stars struggled to penetrate the well-organised Comorian defence. With just three attempts on goal, they went into halftime without a breakthrough despite their superior play.
After the recess, Ghana came back with renewed intensity and purpose. Alidu Seidu delivered a superb cross into the box, with Thomas Partey controlling the ball neatly before setting up Mohammed Kudus, who connected brilliantly to slot the ball into the net, giving the Black Stars the much-needed lead.
Moments later, Jordan Ayew came close to doubling the advantage after weaving past two defenders, but his effort was blocked by the resilient Comoros defence. Kudus also had another opportunity after dribbling into the Comoros 18-yard box, but he narrowly missed the target.
In the 80th minute, Comoros mounted pressure after a misplaced pass from Ghana, but their finishing let them down as the shot went wide. The visitors had another chance late in the game to level the score, but they ballooned the ball over the bar.
The Black Stars held firm in the closing minutes, maintaining composure and possession to protect their slim lead. The final whistle sparked celebrations as Mohammed Kudus’ decisive goal ensured Ghana’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
