Black Stars: I’m not impressed with Otto Addo’s performance – Kofi Adams

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of Black Stars coach Otto Addo, describing his tenure as unconvincing despite Ghana’s position in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.
The Black Stars, chasing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, currently lead their group with 19 points.
However, Adams insists that results alone do not reflect the quality of performances under Addo.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the minister expressed concern over Ghana’s inconsistency in the qualifiers.
“Very soon, AFCON is going to start in Morocco. Are we going to be part of it? No, we will watch on TV. We have not even qualified for the World Cup yet. We still need a win and at least a draw to comfortably say that nobody can overtake us,” he said.
Adams stressed that Otto Addo’s leadership does not yet deserve commendation.
“If I tell you I am impressed, then it means I do not know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement. Even when you meet the coach himself, he admits he got things wrong and takes responsibility. But the question is, for how long will you continue to take blame for wrong decisions?” he questioned.
Since taking charge, Otto Addo has overseen 16 matches, winning six, drawing five, and losing five.
Critics argue that the results highlight the team’s lack of stability.
The Bigger Picture
After dropping two crucial points against Chad and winning against Mali, the Black Stars now need at least four points from their remaining fixtures to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana, who have already missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, will be seeking their fifth World Cup qualification in the country’s history.
