How Claude Le Roy, Niang and El Hadji Diouf saved AFCON final after chaos

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final teetered on the edge of chaos before veteran French coach Claude Le Roy stepped in to calm tensions, ensuring Africa’s flagship football event reached its conclusion.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time of the Morocco vs. Senegal showdown, when the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts and disallowed a Senegal goal for a marginal infringement.
The decisions sparked furious protests from the Senegal bench, with head coach Pape Thiaw instructing players to leave the pitch. Several players complied, creating scenes of confusion and tension that threatened to see the final abandoned.
Amid the turmoil, Senegal captain Sadio Mané remained on the field, evaluating the situation as his teammates and staff clashed over the correct course of action.
It was then that Mané turned to Le Roy, present at the stadium in his capacity as a television analyst. The former Senegal coach, revered across African football, played a key role in defusing the crisis.
“When Mané was left alone on the pitch, he came and asked me, ‘What would you do if you were in my position?’” Le Roy recounted.
“I replied, ‘I would continue playing, because the outcome is never decided!’ Then Sadio brought his teammates back onto the pitch.”
Mané also consulted former Senegal internationals Mamadou Niang and El Hadji Diouf, whose advice reinforced Le Roy’s message and helped solidify the team’s decision to resume play.

Once order was restored, the drama continued on the pitch. Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy saved Brahim Díaz’s penalty, a pivotal moment that shifted momentum firmly in Senegal’s favour.
In extra time, Pape Gueye struck in the 94th minute to secure a 1–0 victory, delivering Senegal their second AFCON title.
After the final whistle, Mané emphasised that abandoning the match was never an option, highlighting the importance of protecting the reputation of African football.
In a night marked by controversy, Claude Le Roy’s calm counsel proved instrumental in preserving the integrity of AFCON 2025, ensuring the tournament’s climax was decided on the pitch rather than off it.
