The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned what it describes as a military invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States of America, warning that the action threatens international peace, violates international law, and undermines the sovereignty of nations.

In an official press statement dated 4 January 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said it had noted “with grave concern” reports that U.S. forces entered Venezuelan territory on 3 January 2026, leading to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

According to the statement, the operation—allegedly carried out under the name “Operation Absolute Resolve”—resulted in the removal of Venezuela’s sitting Head of State, a move Ghana says breaches diplomatic norms and sets a dangerous global precedent.

Condemnation of Unilateral Use of Force

Ghana reiterated its commitment to the principles of international law, particularly the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The Government stressed that the use of unilateral military force against a sovereign country without international authorization is unacceptable.

“Such actions undermine the established global order and pose a significant threat to international peace and security,” the Ministry stated.

Concerns Over Leadership Abduction

The Foreign Affairs Ministry described the alleged abduction of President Maduro and his spouse as a serious violation of diplomatic conventions, noting that forcibly removing an elected leader under military action risks normalizing regime change through force.

Ghana warned that allowing such actions to go unchallenged could endanger the safety of leaders worldwide and weaken international diplomatic protections.

Rejection of External Control

The statement also took issue with claims attributed to U.S. authorities suggesting that Washington would assume control over Venezuela’s governance. Ghana described this as an affront to the Venezuelan people’s right to self-determination.

“We reject any attempt to return to an era of external control over the resources and governance of sovereign nations,” the Government emphasized.

Call for Immediate Release and Dialogue

Ghana called for the immediate and unconditional release of President Nicolás Maduro and Mrs. Cilia Flores and urged the restoration of constitutional order in Venezuela through peaceful means.

The Government appealed to the international community to prioritize dialogue, diplomacy, and mediation over military solutions, stressing that lasting peace can only be achieved through inclusive political processes.

Urging Restraint Amid Rising Tensions

Reaffirming its principled opposition to foreign intervention, Ghana urged all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation and loss of life.

The statement was signed by the Director of Communications on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
