ECG deploys high-capacity transformers to boost power supply in Kumasi

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun installing two high-capacity power transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi in a major move to improve electricity reliability across the Ashanti regional capital.
The project involves replacing two existing 20/26MVA transformers with upgraded 30/39MVA units, significantly increasing the station’s capacity and reducing pressure on the power distribution network.
This intervention is expected to directly address recent intermittent power outages and voltage fluctuations in parts of Kumasi, largely attributed to rising electricity demand rather than generation challenges.
ECG Highlights Importance of Project
ECG’s acting managing director underscored the significance of the upgrade in supporting the city’s rapid growth.
“Kumasi is expanding, and electricity demand is rising with it. This upgrade ensures our infrastructure keeps pace so customers can enjoy more stable and reliable power.”

On-site, the manager for substation & switchgear maintenance in the Ashanti sub-transmission division described the operation as both critical and technically demanding.
"The existing transformers are under pressure. These new units give the system breathing room and improve overall stability."
Installation Timeline and Coordination
Technical teams from Accra and the Ashanti Sub-Transmission Division are jointly overseeing the installation process. The transformers are scheduled for installation and activation on:
May 6: Replacement and energisation of Transformer 2
May 7: Replacement and energisation of Transformer 1
Planned Power Outages Announced
To ensure safety during the installation, ECG will implement controlled power outages on both days:
Dates: May 6 and May 7, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The process will involve temporary shutdowns of sections of the 33kV network and regulated load management on 11kV feeders.
ECG Assures Customers.
ECG has assured residents and businesses that the interruptions will be carefully managed and limited in duration.
"We understand the inconvenience, but these are necessary steps to deliver a more reliable system," said Collins Manu, Communications Officer for Ashanti Sub-Transmission.
