Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for the first time in his international career during Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Thursday — a moment that marked a rare blot on his legendary record.

The Portuguese captain received his marching orders for violent conduct after appearing to swing an elbow at Ireland defender Dara O’Shea. Although the referee initially issued a yellow card, VAR intervened, prompting a pitch-side review that resulted in the decision being upgraded to a straight red card.

This dismissal was Ronaldo’s first in 226 appearances for Portugal, adding to his tally of 13 career red cards at club level. Before Thursday’s match, his last sending-off came in April 2024 while playing for Al Nassr against Al Hilal — also for violent conduct after a similar elbow incident.

At the time of the red card, Ireland were leading 2–0 in the 61st minute. Portugal entered the match knowing that a win would secure their qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico with one game remaining.

Ronaldo reacted to his dismissal with visible frustration, sarcastically applauding the home fans as he left the pitch.

He will now miss Portugal’s final Group F qualifier against Armenia — an unfortunate consequence for both the star forward and his national side.

First Time for Everything

Despite his fiery competitive spirit, this was the first red card Ronaldo has ever received while representing Portugal — a surprising milestone considering his long and decorated international career.

The incident adds another chapter to his storied journey, reminding football fans that even the greatest are not immune to moments of passion and controversy.
