Club Brugge and Barcelona played out a breathtaking 3-3 draw in Belgium in one of the most entertaining UEFA Champions League nights of the season. The match was filled with counter-attacks, relentless tempo, and moments of individual brilliance, with both sides showcasing sharp attacking intent but exposing defensive vulnerabilities throughout.
Barcelona arrived as favourites, but Club Brugge showed they were not intimidated, pressing with intelligence and breaking with explosive pace. The Belgian hosts repeatedly caught the Blaugrana high line out, with Forbs emerging as the key outlet in transition.
Fast Start and Early Shock: Brugge Punish Barcelona’s High Line
The game began at full tempo, and Club Brugge struck first in just the sixth minute. A well-timed run by Forbs allowed him to break free of the defensive line before he unselfishly squared the ball to Luca Tresoldi, who finished coolly under Wojciech Szczęsny to give the Belgian side a 1-0 lead.
Barcelona responded quickly. Just minutes later, Fermín López threaded a perfectly weighted pass to Ferran Torres, who side-footed past Nordin Jackers to level the match at 1-1 and restore balance.
But Brugge’s counter-attacking threat remained lethal. In the 17th minute, a poorly executed Barcelona corner turned into a devastating counter. Christos Tzolis switched play into space for Forbs, who accelerated clear and curled a composed left-footed finish into the far corner to put Brugge ahead once more at 2-1.
Barcelona pushed for an equaliser before the break, with Jules Koundé rattling the crossbar and Ferran narrowly dinking wide, but Brugge held their advantage into halftime.
Second Half Drama: Late Goals, VAR and Near Misses
The second half continued at the same furious tempo. Barcelona seemed revitalised and equalised after a brilliant individual sequence from Lamine Yamal, whose dribble and link-up with Fermín carved through Brugge’s defence.
However, just two minutes later, Brugge struck again — and unsurprisingly, Forbs was at the centre of it. The forward once more beat Barcelona's defensive line and delicately lifted his finish over Szczęsny to restore the hosts' lead at 3-2.
Brugge nearly extended their advantage when Forbs was involved in a contentious penalty moment in the 70th minute, but VAR ruled that he initiated the contact, denying the hosts a chance to go two goals ahead.
Barcelona would make that reprieve count. In the 77th minute, a dangerous Yamal cross was diverted into his own net by Tzolis, bringing the score to 3-3 and setting up a frenetic final stretch.
Later on, Brugge thought they had won the match after Vermant dispossessed Szczęsny and scored, but VAR intervened again, this time awarding the foul to the Barcelona goalkeeper.
Both teams ended the night with matching xG totals of approximately 2.14, underlining the contest’s finely balanced nature. Club Brugge will feel proud of a fearless performance that exposed Barcelona’s defensive fragility, while Hansi Flick’s side will have serious questions to answer about their high line and transition discipline.
