Chelsea sent a powerful message to the rest of Europe with a commanding 3-0 victory over Barcelona at Stamford Bridge, producing a performance worthy of Club World Cup champions and firmly asserting their Champions League credentials.

From the opening whistle, Enzo Maresca’s side was relentless. Chelsea set the tempo early, pinning Barcelona back and twice finding the net through Enzo Fernández, only for both goals to be ruled offside.

Their pressure eventually told, however, when Jules Kounde turned a dangerous cross into his own net, giving the hosts a deserved lead.

Barcelona’s uphill battle steepened further on the brink of half-time. Captain Ronald Araújo, already cautioned, received a second yellow card after a reckless challenge, leaving Hansi Flick’s men to play the entire second half with 10 men.

Chelsea’s control only tightened after the break, and their superiority was underlined by two exceptional goals.

Rising star Estevão produced a breathtaking solo effort, weaving through the Barcelona defence before finishing with composure. Moments later, Liam Delap applied a smart, clinical touch to make it 3-0 and end any faint hopes of a Catalan comeback.

The numbers reflected Chelsea’s dominance: an xG of 1.76 compared to Barcelona’s 0.79, the bulk of which came from a single early Ferran Torres chance that might have changed the complexion of the match.

The win moves Chelsea up to fifth in the Champions League league-phase standings, with five victories in their last six outings. Confidence will be sky-high heading into Sunday’s Premier League showdown with title rivals Arsenal.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are left to regroup after a subdued and concerning display that places their progression to the knockout phase under real pressure. Flick’s side will look to respond quickly when they host Alavés on Saturday.
