The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that one person has died while four others were rescued following the collapse of a two-story building at Adenta New Site in Accra on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

According to the GNFS, the incident trapped five members of the same family beneath the rubble, prompting an intensive rescue operation by emergency response teams.

Speaking to the GNFS media team, Regional Fire Officer ACFO Rashid Kwame revealed that four victims were successfully pulled from the debris and rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for medical treatment.

He explained that rescue efforts were particularly challenging due to the position of the final victim, a woman who had become trapped between two structural pillars. Emergency personnel used specialized rescue equipment and chiseling tools in an attempt to reach her.

Sadly, the woman was later recovered from the wreckage but was pronounced dead. Her body was subsequently handed over to the police for transfer to the morgue.

"There were five people trapped in the building. We managed to rescue four, but the last victim, a female, was retrieved lifeless from beneath the rubble and handed over to the police," ACFO Rashid stated.

Family of Five Trapped

Officials disclosed that all five victims belonged to the same household, comprising three males and two females. The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Margaret, who was also the mother of two of the rescued victims.

Preliminary Investigations Point to Structural Concerns

Initial assessments by the Ghana National Fire Service suggest that structural weaknesses may have contributed to the collapse.

Investigators gathered accounts from residents who claimed the building had shown visible signs of instability prior to the incident, with some describing the structure as noticeably tilted.

ACFO Rashid further disclosed that a manhole had reportedly been constructed close to some of the building's supporting pillars, raising concerns about the integrity of the foundation.

NADMO Officials Visit Survivors

Meanwhile, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by Deputy Director-General for Operations Teddy Safori Addi, visited the survivors at the 37 Military Hospital.

The delegation assessed the condition of the victims and assured them of support as they continue receiving medical treatment.

The tragic incident has renewed concerns over building safety standards and structural integrity in rapidly developing communities across Ghana.
