Anthropic hit by major outage as Claude.ai and Claude code go down amid rising demand

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic experienced widespread service disruptions on Monday morning, leaving thousands of users unable to access its Claude platform.
The outage primarily affected Claude.ai and Claude Code, while the company confirmed that its Claude API remained operational.
Many users reported encountering errors when attempting to log in or log out of their accounts.

According to updates on Anthropic’s status page, the disruption was linked specifically to issues within the Claude.ai interface and authentication pathways.
Although the company has not disclosed the root cause, it stated that the problem has been identified and corrective measures are underway.
The technical difficulties come amid a surge in user activity on Claude, which recently climbed to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings — surpassing rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT after previously remaining outside the top 20.

The spike in downloads followed heightened public attention surrounding Anthropic’s reported tensions with the U.S. government.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump instructed federal agencies to suspend the use of Anthropic products amid disagreements over safeguards that limit the Department of Defence's ability to deploy its AI models for large-scale domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth indicated that the company could be classified as a supply-chain threat, though Anthropic maintains it has not received any formal notification.
The outage underscores the growing scrutiny and operational pressures facing AI companies amid rising demand and intensifying regulatory and national security debates.
