Kylian Mbappé struck twice from the penalty spot to hand Xabi Alonso a victorious start to his Champions League tenure as Real Madrid manager, edging Marseille 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.

It was anything but straightforward for Los Blancos, who were reduced to 10 men in the closing stages after Dani Carvajal was sent off for an attempted headbutt on Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli.

Marseille had earlier stunned the home crowd when Timothy Weah marked his Champions League debut with the opening goal.

Madrid suffered a further setback as Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off with a hamstring injury just minutes into the contest, while teenager Franco Mastantuono rattled the post in an early scare.

Madrid found their way back when Geoffrey Kondogbia’s reckless foul on Rodrygo gifted Mbappé the chance to equalise from the spot in the 28th minute. The Frenchman coolly slotted his effort into the bottom-left corner, despite Rulli guessing correctly.

The hosts squandered several opportunities on either side of half-time before Carvajal’s needless clash with Rulli left them facing an uphill battle.

However, fortune turned again when a sliding tackle from Medina caught Vinícius Júnior’s arm, prompting a second penalty.

Mbappé stepped up once more, this time squeezing the ball under Rulli’s hand to secure a hard-fought opening win for the 14-time European champions.
