Heartbreak for Nigeria: Osimhen injury sees Super Eagles crash out to DR Congo

Nigeria’s World Cup hopes were dashed as they fell 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo following a 1–1 draw in their decisive qualifier, compounded by a devastating injury to star striker Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen, currently the Champions League’s leading scorer and Nigeria’s second-highest all-time goalscorer, had been expected to lead the Super Eagles into the inter-confederation play-offs.
Yet his night in Morocco ended after just 45 minutes when he limped off at half-time and could not return for the second half, leaving a noticeable void in Nigeria’s attack.

The Super Eagles had started brightly, taking the lead within three minutes when Frank Onyeka’s low strike deflected off Axel Tuanzebe into the net. But DR Congo quickly responded, with Mechak Elia capitalising on Wilfred Ndidi’s failure to intercept a right-wing cross to level the score.
Following Osimhen’s exit, Nigeria struggled to maintain their attacking threat, ceding much of the second half to their opponents.
Extra time saw DR Congo have two goals disallowed for fouls, during which Osimhen remained animated on the touchline, urging his teammates and trying to inspire a comeback despite his injury. As the game went to penalties, DR Congo’s substitution of goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu proved decisive.

Fayulu first denied Moses Simon after Calvin Bassey missed, then blocked Semi Ajayi’s effort, leaving Chancel Mbemba to convert the winning spot-kick and send DR Congo through.
The defeat confirms that Osimhen will miss next year’s World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
With Galatasaray set to face Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League in under 10 days, concerns mount over his fitness—not only for club duties but also for Nigeria’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations campaign starting next month.
