Ghana has achieved a major diplomatic breakthrough as the United States has lifted the visa restrictions it imposed on the country earlier this year.
According to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, the decision was formally communicated to him by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mr Ablakwa announced that Ghanaians are once again eligible for five-year multiple entry visas, together with other enhanced consular privileges.
“I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome,” the minister said.
It will be recalled that in July this year, the US introduced visa restrictions on Ghana and several other countries. Applicants from Ghana were limited to a maximum three-month single entry visa.

The Trump Administration explained that the restrictions were in response to what it described as years of visa overstays by Ghanaian nationals, particularly students.
The lifting of the restrictions, Mr Ablakwa noted, reflects progress in restoring healthier and stronger relations between Ghana and the United States.
