The Member of Parliament for Tempane and Minister for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has condemned the recent attack on two immigration officers in her constituency, which claimed the life of one officer.
The incident occurred on November 2, 2025, at Nagani, a community near the Ghana–Togo border in the Tempane District. The officers were reportedly ambushed and shot by unidentified assailants while returning from duty. One of them died from his injuries, while the other was left wounded.
In response, the Ghana Armed Forces deployed personnel to the area on November 3 to assist with security operations. However, the deployment has sparked public concern after soldiers allegedly invaded the Basyonde market, assaulting traders and residents. Several people were reported injured, and others fled the scene, abandoning their goods.
In a statement issued on Monday, Madam Akanvariba condemned both the attack on the immigration officers and the alleged military brutality that followed.
“I call upon the government, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the security agencies to conduct a transparent and urgent investigation into both the shooting at Nagani and the military operation in Basyonde,” she said.
She further described the military’s reported actions as unacceptable, urging the government to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.
“Such military action against innocent civilians is unacceptable and unjustifiable. While the state has a duty to investigate criminal acts and maintain law and order, it must not punish the innocent for the actions of a few,” she added.
Madam Akanvariba called for calm among residents as investigations continue, assuring them of her commitment to ensuring justice and peace in the district.
