A tragic incident disrupted Ghana’s 69th Independence Day celebrations in Nanton, where a young man was reportedly shot and killed during festivities on March 6.
According to local reports from Tamale, the victim was allegedly shot by the chief of Cheko, identified as Mohammed and popularly known as "Water", during the event held in the community.

Residents who spoke after the incident claimed that no immediate arrest was made despite the presence of state security officers at the venue.
Sources in the area say the Cheko chief and members of his entourage reportedly left the scene shortly after the shooting and are believed to have travelled toward Tamale, the regional capital.
As of the time of reporting, security authorities had not released an official statement confirming the circumstances of the incident or announcing any arrests. The fatal shooting has left residents of Nanton shocked, particularly because it occurred during a national celebration meant to promote unity and patriotism.

Across Ghana, Independence Day events typically feature school parades, cultural performances, and speeches by local leaders, drawing large crowds of community members.
However, the Northern Region has previously experienced security tensions. In 2025, a violent clash in Nanton linked to local disputes reportedly resulted in one death and forced some residents and students to temporarily flee the area due to safety concerns.
The latest incident has renewed concerns among residents about public safety during large community gatherings. Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the community awaits further updates.
