The Ghana Police Service has shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all officers following a violent attack by some youth in the town.
According to the Eastern Regional Police Command, the attack happened on Sunday, September 21, 2025, around 7:00 am.
A group of young people stormed the police station and barracks, throwing stones, sticks, and other weapons. They also tried to set the building on fire.
The violence was in reaction to the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, also known as D-Ball. He had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing and was receiving treatment at the Kukurantumi Community Hospital before his death.
A police reinforcement team was quickly sent to the scene and managed to restore calm.
Following the attack, the Inspector-General of Police directed that all officers be removed from the station and the facility closed down for now.
The police have met with the family of the deceased and community leaders to assure them that investigations into the suspect’s death are ongoing.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have started looking into what led to the suspect’s death.
Meanwhile, video footage of the attack is being reviewed to identify those involved. The police say all those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted.
The Eastern Regional Police Command is urging the public to use peaceful and legal ways to address issues rather than turning to violence.
