The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked Israeli attack” on the State of Qatar, which resulted in casualties, destruction of property, and loss of lives.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the government stressed that the airstrikes were a blatant violation of international law and an affront to Qatar’s sovereignty.
It further cautioned that such actions threaten to derail ongoing peace efforts between Israel and Palestine.
“The Government of the Republic of Ghana condemns the attack in view of the fact that the airstrikes constitute a clear violation of international law and an affront to the sovereignty of the State of Qatar.
“This attack undermines the ongoing pursuit of peace between the State of Palestine and Israel,” the statement noted.
President John Dramani Mahama, speaking on behalf of all Ghanaians, extended solidarity to the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the people of Qatar “in these difficult times.”
The government also commended Qatar’s consistent role in mediating peace in the Middle East and urged that this “condemnable incident” should not obstruct its diplomatic efforts. Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to supporting global initiatives that promote dialogue, protect sovereignty, and ensure lasting stability.
Background to the Attack
According to AP News, the Israeli military carried out an airstrike on September 9, 2025, in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district, targeting Hamas leaders who were reportedly meeting to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal aimed at ending the ongoing Gaza war. The assault, codenamed Operation Summit of Fire, marked Israel’s first strike on Qatari soil.
The attack left at least six people dead, including a Qatari security officer, while senior Hamas figures Khalil al-Hayya and Zaher Jabarin narrowly survived, AP News reported. Al Jazeera confirmed that several aides close to the Hamas leadership were among those killed.
The move sparked international condemnation. Reuters quoted UN Secretary-General António Guterres describing the strike as a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty. Russia’s Foreign Ministry, also cited by Reuters, called the attack a “gross violation” of the UN Charter, while the German government labelled it “unacceptable”, warning it could derail ceasefire and hostage-release talks.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s prime minister branded the incident a “blatant attack” and vowed that the country reserved the “right to respond”, urging a united regional reaction, according to the Times of India.
The strike came at a sensitive moment, as Qatar has long positioned itself as a key mediator in Middle East peace negotiations and hosts the largest U.S. military base in the region. While The Guardian reported that Washington was informed of the attack in advance, Qatari officials maintained they were only warned at the last minute as the operation was already underway.
