The National Identification Authority (NIA) has outlined significant international advantages of the Ghana Card, positioning it as a key tool for easing travel and enhancing identity verification for Ghanaians abroad.

According to the NIA, the Ghana Card is increasingly becoming relevant beyond Ghana’s borders, particularly for citizens in the diaspora seeking smoother travel and administrative processes.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 10, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, revealed that the Authority is actively engaging foreign embassies to expand the global acceptance of the Ghana Card. These discussions aim to integrate the card into international systems, especially in visa application procedures.

He explained that while visa policies are determined by individual countries, ongoing diplomatic engagements are focused on encouraging embassies to recognise the Ghana Card as part of their documentation requirements.

“We are still having conversations with embassies. These are states on their own, so you cannot force them unless through civil engagement. We are doing that and exploring the possibility of embassies requesting the Ghana Card when you apply for a visa. So far, it has been positive, and we are hopeful we can strike that deal,” he stated.

Mr Darlas further highlighted that Ghanaians living abroad are already benefiting from the Ghana Card, particularly in terms of travel convenience. He noted that holders of the card can return to Ghana without the need for a visa in certain cases.

“For those in the diaspora, if you are a Ghanaian and you have a Ghana Card and you want to travel from Canada to Ghana, you do not need to acquire a Ghanaian visa. With just the Ghana Card, you get your ticket and fly to Ghana,” he explained.

The NIA emphasised that this initiative forms part of a broader strategy to elevate the Ghana Card into a globally recognised identity document. The move is expected to improve mobility, streamline verification processes, and enhance administrative efficiency for Ghanaians living and working overseas.
