The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the arrest of Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) William Mensah, the soldier captured in a viral video assaulting a pharmacy attendant and a customer near Burma Camp in Accra on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

In a statement dated Thursday, October 30, 2025, and signed by Captain (Ghana Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of Public Relations, the GAF announced that investigations into the disturbing incident have commenced.

According to the statement, the arrest of the suspect was carried out by the Ghana Military Police at dawn on Thursday. “The suspect is assisting in investigations over the incident. The victims have also undergone medical attention and are assisting with investigations,” the statement noted.

The GAF strongly condemned the conduct of the soldier, emphasising that such behaviour goes against the values and discipline of the Armed Forces. It further assured the public that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken to ensure justice is served.

“The Armed Forces assures the general public that it will not condone any acts of assault on civilians and will not shield any soldier engaged in such behaviour,” the statement added.

The incident, captured on CCTV and first shared by GhOne TV, has since gone viral across social media platforms. In the footage, the soldier — dressed in civilian clothing — is seen in a heated exchange with a pharmacy attendant before slapping both the attendant and a female customer.

The woman, who attempted to record the attack with her phone, was seen being struck multiple times on the head as the soldier tried to stop her from filming.

Reports indicate that the confrontation started after the soldier demanded a refund of GHS 65 for medication he had earlier sent a boy to purchase. When the pharmacy staff explained that refunds could not be issued for opened medication, the soldier became enraged and launched the assault.

The video has sparked widespread public outrage, with many Ghanaians taking to social media to demand the soldier’s immediate dismissal and prosecution.

Meanwhile, the GAF has reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline within its ranks and ensuring that such unprofessional conduct does not go unpunished.
