Paul Biya, who has led Cameroon since 1982, is among the world’s longest-serving and oldest heads of state. At 92, he recently announced his candidacy for an unprecedented eighth term in the country’s October 12, 2025, presidential election.

In a surprising turn of events, his daughter, Brenda Biya, widely known on social media as “King Nasty”, has openly urged Cameroonians not to vote for her father. Speaking during a TikTok Live session, she accused President Biya of presiding over decades of stagnation, widespread poverty, and rising unemployment, criticising his long rule as detrimental to the nation’s progress.

Her remarks mark a historic first in African politics—the child of a sitting president publicly opposing their parent’s leadership. The statement has sparked widespread debate online, drawing attention both within Cameroon and internationally.

President Biya’s rule has long been overshadowed by accusations of authoritarianism, systemic corruption, human rights abuses, and disputed elections. Nevertheless, in July he confirmed his decision to contest again, posting his declaration on his official X account in both French and English.

“I am a candidate for the 12 October 2025 presidential election,” Biya stated, assuring citizens of his continued commitment.

“Rest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the serious challenges facing us. Together, there are no challenges we cannot meet. The best is still to come.”

In a formal declaration, the president framed his candidacy as a response to “numerous and insistent calls” from Cameroonians across the country’s ten regions and the diaspora. He emphasised his lifelong duty to safeguard national security and the welfare of citizens, while acknowledging the growing difficulties posed by an uncertain global environment.

As the election approaches, the unprecedented opposition from within Biya’s own family has added a new dimension to Cameroon’s political landscape, raising fresh questions about leadership, legacy, and the future of the Central African nation.
