The High Court in Accra has delivered its ruling in the divorce case between businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye (popularly known as RNAQ) and his former wife, Joana Quaye, awarding her a lump sum of GH¢300,000 as part of the final settlement.

According to reports by The Law Platform, Ms Quaye, who is a co-founder, shareholder, and director of Quick Credit Microfinance Company Limited (now operating as Bills), initiated the proceedings and had sought a financial settlement of GH¢50 million from her former husband.

The case was heard by Justice Kofi Dorgu, a Court of Appeal judge sitting with additional responsibility at the High Court. In determining the division of matrimonial assets, the court granted Ms Quaye GH¢300,000, significantly lower than the amount requested.

In his ruling, Justice Dorgu explained that the award was deliberately modest, noting that it was intended, in part, to discourage divorces motivated by expectations of substantial financial gain.

“The decision of the Court, reduced into its final orders, justified the grant of financial relief that may be regarded as a modest sum of GH¢300,000.00 in favour of the petitioner. The Petitioner had sought a lump sum payment of 50 million Ghana cedis from the Respondent,” the report stated.

It further added that despite Ms Quaye’s role as co-founder and director of the respondent’s principal business, the court considered it necessary to limit the financial award in line with its broader reasoning.

Beyond the monetary settlement, the court granted Ms Quaye one-third ownership of the couple’s matrimonial home in Dansoman, along with two vehicles. Mr Quaye was also directed to take full responsibility for the children’s education and healthcare.

In outlining the property arrangement, Justice Dorgu stated that Ms Quaye would be entitled to three bedrooms within the property, with shared access to common areas such as the living room, kitchen, and other facilities, while the remaining two-thirds would be retained by Mr Quaye.

He also noted that the allocation took into account her custody of the children, the respondent’s alternative accommodation, and provisions made to address her mobility needs.
